FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVALS Mulhouse Beer Festival Mondial de la Bière February 17-19, 2017

One of five international beer festivals under the Mondial de la Bière banner (originally set up by three beer-lovers in

Montreal), this huge celebration takes place at Mulhouse Exhibition Park. As Alsace’s second city, Mulhouse is slap bang in what is arguably France’s best brewing region. Entry to the festival is free but you have to buy coupons and exchange them for the various ales, lagers, porters and stouts on offer. festivalmondialbiere.qc.ca

This is surely one of the world’s most important festivals for short films. Established in 1995, it now attracts over 100,000 film buffs every year who get their brief but regular doses of cinema at dozens of venues all over town. Many film directors who first gained notoriety at this event have gone on to successful careers in mainstream cinema. www.clermont-filmfest.com

Bordeaux Wine Festival Bordeaux Fête le Vin June 23-26, 2016

It claims to be “the world’s largest wine tourism attraction”. This annual festival includes a wine-tasting trail along the Bordeaux quays, guided vineyard tours outside the city, château wine tastings, concerts, art exhibitions, firework displays, light shows and even a barrel- rolling competition. www.bordeaux-wine-festival.com

Goût du Large festival Le Goût du Large November 12-13, 2016 Port-en-Bessin-Huppain is Normandy’s leading producer of coquilles Saint-Jacques (that’s scallops to us). To celebrate this extraordinary fact, every year in November the town stages a festival called Le Goût du Large where more than 50,000 seafood fans turn up to taste the bivalve molluscs, and discover the arcane secrets of scallop fishing. To aid their digestion, there are also lots of sailors singing rousing sea shanties. www.portenbessin-huppain.fr

Plum Festival Fêtes de la Mirabelle August 2016

Who would have thought that the humble plum could be so popular? Around 80,000 visitors come to Metz’s Fêtes de la Mirabelle, the city’s annual celebration of this wonderful fruit. Attractions at the festival
