ARA Meets with Insurance Representatives at NACE

D

uring the recent International Autobody Congress & Exposition (NACE) event in Detroit, the leadership of ARA met with a number of automo- tive insurance representatives. The dis- cussions centered on ways to continue to ensure access to recycled OEM parts in insurance repair estimates. ARA leaders also encouraged the insurance repre- sentatives to become more engaged in the activities of the Association and provided an overview of the challenges and opportunities connected with the ongoing record number of automo- tive safety recalls.

Dear Fellow Recycler,

information campaign that Ford has just launched is outrageous and serious action must be taken! If you have not yet seen Ford’s commer- cial and website, go to TakeAGoodLook.com (see graphic above). Developed by Ford, the automaker takes dead aim at the heart of our businesses. The attack is directed to the consumers’ continued use of the parts we sell. I along with my colleagues on the Executive Committee believe ARA’s response must be firm and decisive. The time is now for all of us to come together and fight back. ARA is considering several actions which may include a complaint about deceptive or unfair trade practices, and/or other appropriate steps. We have reached out to other stakeholders and industry supporters, including a num- ber of insurance companies, auctions, and ARA vendors. It is critical that a coordinat- ed and comprehensive strategy take place amongst the industries that are adversely effected by this deceptive campaign.

It is times like this that having a well-funded organization and significant money in the bank are crucial. I am asking for your help in responding to this attack with an invest- ment in the 2015 Automotive Recyclers Defense Fund. A contribution by you to the ARA Defense Fund provides the support we need to promote our message and ensure that we have the means in place to consider all options for our response. Please con- sider making a sizeable contribution today. I am forwarding my $1,000 contribution today and hope you will consider matching it. Whatever you can do is appreciated! Thank you for your support, Ricky Young ARA President

During that dialogue, ARA highlighted the Association’s recent successes in working with and educating federal offi- cials about the need for access to OEM parts data, specifically the recent state- ment made by U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, in which he stated that automakers should provide “parts numbers related to

recalls” in an “efficient and easy to use format directly to recyclers and others who need this information.” ARA noted that other industry stakeholders have stat- ed their support on this issue, for instance during NHTSA’s “Retooling Recall” Workshop in late April and U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) in a June Congressional hearing regarding Takata airbags.

Lastly, ARA spoke to the insur- ance representative about the continued commitment to promoting effective competition in the markets for replace- ment parts and equipment to ensure effi- cient repair and maintenance of motor vehicles around the globe.

ARA Joins Lawsuit Against Baykeepers to Retain Best Management Practices Option in Stormwater Permit

A

s a member of the Federal Storm- water Association (FSWA) for the past several years, ARA has worked regu- larly with FSWA members to help make the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stormwater permitting program as effective and reasonable for statutorily regulated entities including professional automotive recyclers. The latest partici- patory effort focused on the group’s suc- cess in retaining the ability to use best management practices (bmps) to control stormwater pollutants instead of having to apply numeric effluent limits in the 2015 EPA multi sector general permit (MSGP). It was indeed a win for regulat- ed entities and illustrated what a coalition of similarly affected entities could accom- plish when joining forces. Unfortunately, our “win” could be short-lived if the six environmental groups (including three Baykeeper
