Hungry yet again, we stopped
for lunch at The French Rooms in Bushmills. The French Rooms are located in the heart of Bushmills and, as we made our trip before the second lockdown, the restaurant was open. Very importantly, the restaurant also has a Covid accreditation from taste Causeway and the North West Regional College. I opted for a nice cold Belfast Blonde, while Alan chose an orange juice as he was the designated motorhome driver for our adventure. We are both vegan, and the The French Rooms did not disappoint - they had two amazing options on their menu and we ordered both to share. One was a pizza-esque type flatbread topped with loads of roast vegetables, rocket and a balsamic glaze, the other was a mushroom and roast garlic tart served with a tomato, rocket and balsamic salad. Both were delicious and really hit the spot with a couple of hungry Glampers!
We parked the Glamper in the car park facing the restaurant, and were able to have a half an hour snooze post-lunch simply by closing the blinds!
After our post-lunch nap, we set off for Dunluce Castle, only a couple of minutes drive up the road from Bushmills. We parked in a car park just half a mile down the road from the Castle as we weren’t sure about parking at the Castle itself. We needn’t have worried though, as there is plenty of space at the Castle and lots of room for a motorhome too. Although, the wee walk was very welcome after our
morning of gluttony!
The earliest standing remains of Dunluce Castle date to around 1500, when the site was established by the MacQuillans. The Castle was the centre of power for their Gaelic lordship, an area of north Antrim known as ‘The Route’, which extended between the Rivers Bann and Bush. In the mid-1550s, the MacQuillans were ousted by the McDonnell, a family descended from the Scottish Clan MacDonald. The MacDonnells soon became the dominant family across North Antrim and the Glens, although they were engaged in almost constant conflict with the surrounding families. There was also conflict with the English Crown, who were concerned about the growing power of the MacDonnells. And while the MacDonnells may feel themselves lucky to have once called this magnificent castle home… it can’t beat our home for the evening! After a walk back to the Glamper and a quick car park coffee to heat us up, we set off for our next destination - Deighan’s Caravan Park
Benone!
After another super comfortable nights sleep in the Glamper, we enjoyed a coffee in the sunshine at Deighans. Deighan’s at Benone is a NITB five-star rated holiday and touring park and is the ideal stopping off place for Glampers looking to explore Ireland’s beautiful North West coastline and attractions. The stunning multiple recipient of the European Blue Flag and Seaside Award, Benone Beach is only a 10 minute walk from Deighan’s and is a must-see when
visiting the area. With seven miles of golden sand and a magnificent back drop of mountain and cliff scenery, and views across to Donegal, Benone is popular with water-sport enthusiasts. The clean, firm, golden sands of Benone are without rocks, shingle or seaweed and are preceded by the glorious natural formations of Benone’s sand dunes. You can drive right down onto the sands at Benone, however we were a little afraid of getting stuck, so decided not to. Plenty of others did drive onto the beach though! The beach is also overlooked by Mussenden Temple high on the cliffs. From Benone Strand you are very close to Magillian Point, where you can board the Lough Foyle Ferry to the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal. You can also take your Glamper on the ferry for between £17-£24
return. But for us it was time to return the Glamper and head back home. I’m sure we will be off on a another adventure soon! You can hire your own fully equipped Glamper from only £95 per night.
