GLIMMER OF HOPE FOR TRAVEL AS POSSIBLE VACCINE FOUND!

With the news that at least one effective Covid vaccine is on the horizon and that the travel industry in Northern Ireland may be in line to receive “some assistance” from Stormont, a new sense of optimism has spread across the the entire industry...

for city and beach destinations and Ryanair predicting a huge “snap back” and preparing for a “price war”. When news of a potential new Covid-19 vaccine,

A

that is reported to be 90% effective, was first announced, shares in TUI UK, International Airlines Group and EasyJet went up dramatically. IAG’s stock shot up 25%, EasyJet rocketed up 35%

and TUI rose 18%. Ryanair also had a moderate 12% increase.

Pfizer/BioNTech have claimed that interim trials

show the new vaccine to be 90% effective, and so far, show no serious side effects. Previously, regulators said they would approve a vaccine at a 50% effectiveness rate. The hopeful results are great news for the struggling travel and tourism industries that have been hit hard during the pandemic, with restrictions on travel customers cancelling their 2020 holidays. “Today is a great day for science and humanity. The

first set of results from our Phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent Covid-19,” Pfizer Chairman and CEO Dr Albert Bourla said. “We are reaching this critical milestone in our

vaccine development program at a time when the world needs it most with infection rates setting new records, hospitals nearing over-capacity and economies struggling to reopen.” In light of this beacon of hope, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays announced that they are set to offer flights and holidays from Bristol for the first time from summer 2021. The airport will become Jet2’s tenth UK base, from

where it will operate to 33 destinations including Izmir in Turkey, Kalamata and Lesvos in Greece and Costa de Almeria in Spain. There are also 11 destinations on sale for winter 21/22, including ski flights to Geneva, Grenoble and Salzburg. CEO Steve Heapy said: “The announcement of

our tenth UK base reflects our long-term strategy to continue growing our successful business and become the UK’s leading leisure travel business.”

Meanwhile Advantage Travel Partnership’s in-

house operator Advantage Holidays has reached a new deal with Expedia to gain access to its hotels across Europe and selected US cities. Lee Ainsworth, Head at Advantage Holidays said:

“We are really excited to be working with Expedia Partner Solutions so that when the travel industry does recover, we will be in the best position possible to provide more price competitive product than ever before, resulting in members having the opportunity to grow their business.” With the possibility that the skies could soon be fully

open, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary has said that airlines will begin to offer hugely discounted fares over the next couple of years to try to recover lost business. Mr O’Leary also predicted that the amount of people

booking a holiday will rise ‘pretty quickly’ during 2021 and 2022 saying that “there would be an enormous ‘snap back’ in travel demand” and while some people might be reluctant to book a longhaul trip, he thinks that “there is going to be an invasion of the beaches of Spain and the Algarve and the Balearics and Greece and Italy”. He said: “They’ll go back because airlines, led by

Ryanair, will discount prices, the hotels will discount prices into the summer of 2021, the winter 2021 into the summer of 2022; we will all discount to try to recover the business we have lost. “They are really going to see a surge in that intra-

European tourism next year and we need to be there, providing the capacity at low prices, keeping fares down,” he said. Meanwhile, the travel trade in Northern Ireland

have also been provided with a much needed boost after trade representative body ANITA met with Northern Irelands First Minister, Deputy First Minister and Finance Minister. Damian Murphy from Terra Travel said: “This was

an important step in our campaign to get a tailored support package for the Northern Ireland Travel Industry. “Myself, Richard Cooper from Carefree travel and

Tracie Duffy from Crumlin Travel met for almost an hour today with ministers from the Executive for what proved to be a constructive and very positive meeting. “First Minister Arlene Foster thanked us for our comprehensive presentation saying we had presented a compelling case for support. We made it clear that we represented everyone involved in the industry here in Northern Ireland and outlined in great detail the effect the pandemic has had on us. “We answered several questions put to us afterwards

and were able to talk through a lot of the issues we are faced with at present. We know it may take a while to pull all the information together that they now require but we left the meeting knowing that they now understand our industry better and with real hope that some assistance may be forthcoming.”

IRLINES and operators have begun to expand their flight and holiday offerings across the board, with Jet2 opening a brand new base from Bristol, Advantage Travel adding more options

Left: The travel and tourism industry has been given a glimmer of light, as a possible new vaccine, with 90% effectiveness, has been found
