32 SPANISH TOURIST BOARD AT TITANIC Bienvenido a mis amigos españoles!

BELFAST Holiday World is always my key occasion for meeting old friends in the international Travel Trade, writes regular columnist JOHN TREW. (See Trew’s Travels, Page 14). Favourite events of the pre-Show period for Travel Journalists and Travel Trade alike are the celebratory meals hosted by the Spanish Tourist Board (STB) the day before.

I look forward to the Media Lunch and never miss it. Last year I was hospitalised with pneumonia in early January. However, through great NHS nursing, firm determination (plus two weeks of antibiotics!) I recovered in time to reach the splendid Private Suite on the panoramic Sixth Floor of TITANIC. the world-beating attraction next door to the Show’s latest venue. I pointed out Sydenham where I grew up, through the East Belfast window, to my particular friend PACO GUTIERREZ — or to give him his proper name, Francisco Jose Garcia Gutierrez of

the STB London Office. He was delighted that he had fruitful discussions with Titanic chefs again this year to offer a menu that was truly appropriate to the occasion — a fusion of Spanish inspiration and Northern Irish culinary skills and local produce. Here’s my translation of the best-ever menu : Starters — Smoked Salmon smoked with Bushmills whiskey barrels OR Spanish meatballs with chorizo in a piquant red sauce; Soup — yellow lentil and chicken soup with smoked bacon. Mains —Paella with chicken, Portavogie Prawns, cockles and mussels and peppers OR Shoulder of Lamb, potatoes, carrots and carmellised onions. Desserts — Cheesecake with new season’s rhubarb OR White Star Line trifle ( as served on Titanic). The Spanish Tourist Board hosted the local Travel Trade in the evening at Titanic Belfast, when the same fusion of Spanish and Northern Ireland culinary delights was enjoyed by more than 50 guests.
