Factory Records, home to the likes of New Order and Happy Mondays, opted against renewing its BPI membership. The legendary label was known to feel it was not receiving value for its money and questioned the relevance of an indie operation being allied to the body. For perhaps the only time in his life, Wilson was unavailable for comment.

decimation of this year’s season, the UK’s live business was predicting one of the busiest summers ever for outdoor shows. The Music Therapy festival at Knebworth was set to be the biggest concert since Live Aid five years earlier, while open-air gigs by Tina Turner, Madonna and the Rolling Stones were also planned alongside the established Glastonbury, Reading, WOMAD and Monsters Of Rock.
