APART TOO LONG

How nice to see VW back in the mailbox after such a long time (nitwits would say “hiatus,” but that used to mean “short pause”).

I did not know, nor had I ever met Michael Lennick, but it was kind of him to mention my book (VW 178:74) with such high praise. His write-up will probably keep that MEN INTO SPACE book from my shelves, as it already (and at this remove) seems light on the stuff I would want—namely, chapter-and-verse on all the stock footage reused in THE OUTER LIMITS.

Oh, PS: Apologies, but that’s Don McLeod as “T.C.” (Quist, Eddie’s brother) on page 60 of the new issue. Oddly disjointed to read the passage about “Neilsen- friendly viewers” (same page) when it’s general knowledge—and you probably already knew—that the guy flipping the TV GUIDE and saying “What is this?” in that se- quence is Mick Garris, accompa- nied by his first wife, Kelly, in what I think is her only film appearance ever. He married Cynthia the fol- lowing year; she had a one-shot appearance in his short (45m) film “Breaking Up,” which was about his divorce from Kelly and shot in the house they shared!

A TEENY, TINY MISTAKE

Your magazine is such a para- gon of accuracy that it compels me to mention when one of your critics help to perpetuate an erro- neous fact in the context of a re- view. Bill Cooke made such a mistake in his review of FANTASTIC VOYAGE [VW 177:52], when he repeated the incorrect notion— asserted by DVD commentator Nick Redman—that director Rich- ard Fleischer and producer Saul David were embarrassed by their work on the film, due to an ab- sence of mention in their respec- tive memoirs. This simply was not the case, as even a cursory look yields three references in Fleischer’s book and seven in David’s. Both men were obviously very proud of their achievement, with David relating an instance where he received praise for the film from Walt Disney, and Fleischer telling an amusing an- ecdote about his direction of the scene where Raquel Welch’s po- lite male co-stars had to be ca- joled into vigorously removing antibodies which had been ad- hered to her celebrated bosom. Obviously, this is not a serious error; however, it is always unfor- tunate to see something in print that could be have been corrected with easy verification. Despite such minor missteps, VW contin- ues to be the most inspiringly pre- sented film publication available anywhere.
