Case Study: Mist Bike HUD


Mist Bike HUD is a new development in motorcycling instrumentation that promises to improve safety by directly relaying information onto a monacle display that clips onto the rider’s helmet, saving vital seconds where the rider would normally take his eyes


off the road to glance down at his dials. Current speed and indicator status are displayed on a miniature OLED screen, using colour coding to highlight urgent issues such as excessive speed. Other information can include gear selected, time of day, engine speed and fuel level.


Bike HUD’s owners had to deal with significant practical constraints to realise the system as an aftermarket product ready to fit to riders’ bikes at an affordable resale price. The units had to be small and lightweight, not only to avoid interfering with the appearance or dynamics of the bike but also to maximise market appeal by allowing a versatile fitting compatible with the broadest possible range of bikes. In addition, each unit had to be tough enough to withstand the rigours of everyday use, including environmental hazards such as rainwater, condensation, dirt and dust, shock, and vibration.


EC Electronics was engaged to work alongside Bike Hud’s design team to perfect the design for manufacture ( DFM ), covering areas such as board layout and component engineering. The prototype Bike-HUD PCB dimensions were reduced to fit within a 102mm x 88mm x 16mm enclosure weighing just 220g. This allowed easier aftermarket installation on a wide


variety of bikes. DFM also helped minimise Bill-Of-Materials (BOM) costs, and streamline assembly processes for optimum productivity and efficiency.


EC’s engineers offered a well- developed in-house process, low- pressure overmoulding, to deliver rugged final packaging for the system modules that provided a high level of protection for the electronics against hazards such as ingress of water


or dirt. “As we discussed the possible packaging options, it became clear that low-pressure overmoulding is well suited to the cost, performance and volume requirements of Bike HUD,” commented Dunstan Power, head of Bike Hud’s embedded systems design partner Bytesnap.


David Vout, Bike HUD’s MD comments, “We planned to launch at Motorcycle Live 2013 to be sure of being first to market, and EC’s commitment was pivotal in enabling us to achieve our goal. We were able to discuss professionally what was possible and what was not, often under quite challenging conditions, helping us to keep the project on track and ensure that we received everything we needed in time for the launch. As we work on the next version of Bike HUD to add extra features such as GPS navigation, EC Electronics is our preferred manufacturing partner. Together I am sure we will achieve further tremendous success.”


Easter Eggs for Romanian Orphanage from EC


For the last four years, EC has been working in partnership with our staff in Romania, running a donation programme for the Hunedoara Centre. Our support for the Hunedoara Centre (highlighted in our previous newsletter) extends beyond the quarterly collections organised at EC. For the past few years we’ve been sending chocolate eggs at Easter to our favourite charity in Romania. This year we sent 55 eggs for the children and we know that they are always eagerly awaited! An Easter egg for every member of staff has been a tradition at EC for as long as anyone can remember so it was only logical to roll out the tradition to the Romanian Orphanage.
