European Train spotting
A thoroughly British novel has proved surprisingly popular in translation, as has another (largely wordless) export: colouring books. Kiera O’Brien reports on book sales in Brazil, Italy and Spain through Nielsen BookScan
on the Train (Doubleday)—after all, it is structured around dreary train journeys through commuter towns and low-level alcoholism, two of the most British themes a book could have. Yet readers across the globe have propelled it to the top of the charts. In the UK, US and Ireland it has shifted over two million copies combined and, in both Spain and Italy, The Girl on the Train—or La Chica del Tren (Editorial Planeta) and La Ragazza del Treno (Piemme) respectively—was the bestselling title in the 52 weeks to 10th March 2016. In fact, the only one of Nielsen’s
B
territories not to embrace Hawkins’ début thriller is Brazil, where it doesn’t even appear among the top 50. Brazilians do not seem to have adopted “grip lit” the way the rest of the book-buying world has. The sole UK adult fiction title in Brazil’s chart—aside from E L James’ oeuvre—is Jojo Moyes’ Me Before You, or Como Eu Era Antes de Voce (Intrinseca), in 14th place. US YA overwhelmingly dominates, with John Green, Veronica Roth and Gayle Forman all selling strongly, and Kiera Cass’ The Heiress—A Herdeira (Seguinte)—hitting the top 10. At the very top of the Brazilian
chart, though, another Brit reigns— colouring book queen Johanna Basford, whose Jardim Secreto and Floresta Encantada (both Sextante) take first and second place, either side of popstar/Catholic priest Padre Marcelo Rossi. In the UK, Basford trails rival Millie Marotta in the adult
rits should be flattered by the international success of Paula Hawkins’ The Girl
colouring book stakes, but in Brazil her combined sales come in at 1.2 million copies, dwarfing the 59,621 copies that Marotta’s Reino Animal (Sextante) has sold. Blogger Isabela Freitas, the Brazilian equivalent of “Zoella”, has two titles in the top 10, both shifting over 100,000 copies each. It’s interesting that, despite the internet’s global reach, YouTubers don’t seem to have much crossover appeal outside of their native territories, even in countries that speak the same language—no British YouTubers appear in the US

or Australian charts, for example. Italy has six homegrown authors
in its top 10, compared to Spain’s four. Reclusive author Elena Ferrante, whose My Brilliant Friend (Europa Editions) has sold 145,388 copies in the UK, cleans up on home soil too—L’Amica Geniale (E/O) sold 167,041 copies in the 52-weeks period under scrutiny. Perhaps less obviously, Anna
Todd’s After (Sperling & Kupfer)— originally One Direction fan-fiction, it garnered over a billion reads on WattPad—has sold well in Italy, shifting 134,442 copies. In the UK,

Below La Chica del Tren, two of Spain’s own—Maria Dueñas’ La Templanza and Arturo Perez- Reverte’s Hombres Buenos— chart second and third, though much of the top 10 is taken up with translated titles.
