BENT’S NOTES AT THE LONDON BOOK FAIR 2016

27 Bent’s Notes at LBF ‘16

Day two at LBF and Horace Bent finds himself duty-bound to accept the hospitality of the ever-generous HarperCollins

T

o Home House, for the traditional LBF curtain raiser/knees-up hosted by

the ever-generous HarperCollins and its bosses Charlie “Where’s Eddie?” Redmayne pictured and Brian “Manchild” Murray. The Georgian splendour of Home House, history buffs, was originally created under the auspices of the formidable Elizabeth, Countess Home, in the 1770s. The countess was nicknamed “the Queen of Hell” by wags at the time for her “irascible behaviour and

lavish parties”. In a totally unrelated note, one could not help but notice Titian-haired NewsCorp UK boss Rebekah Brooks sashaying through the party. Last year the HC hootenanny was given added spice by its poaching of international thriller writer Karin Slaughter from Penguin

Random House ahead of the fair: somewhat galling for the PRH executives who stopped

by for a glass of bubbly. No such fireworks this year, but that did not stop the gathered throng—queues

to get into the party stretched along Portman Square at one point—making a brave fist of it. Our (sober) mole tells me that 330 bottles of champagne were drunk: some 84 more than last year. The venue has a capacity of around 500. Well done all—and see you there next year!

But speaking of generous: HCner was certainly doubly good to newshounds yesterday, wit, with its Down Under division tweeting its love to author Elizabeth McKenzie for

good to h its nightmar

making the Baileys Prize shortlist . . . a good two hours before the announcement took place. Of course, The Bookseller has never mistakenly broken embargo cough, cough but my heart goes out to HC Oz. Overnight scheduled tweets are the stuff of nightmares. 
