It’s the second day of the London Book Fair and if you have just arrived come and say hi at The Bookseller stand (2C10) and don’t forget to head over to Atwood Tate’s stand for some job advice.
Atwood Tate has been in publishing recruitment since 2010 and The Bookseller Careers & Jobs features its roles at

www.thebookseller.com.
Also check out “What’s On” below and follow @Jobsinbooks. I am looking for bloggers to tell me about their experience as a student or jobseeker at LBF, so if you are interested in contributing please email
jobsinbooks@thebookseller.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

QUESTIONS WE ASKED...
Manager (temps/freelances) Atwood Tate
Describe your role. It’s a busy job with many different things to do each day and I never know what type of assignments publishers will send my way, which makes the role exciting and challenging. I meet several people each week to ensure that I have a good mix of temps and freelances to call on. Most publishers require temps and freelances very quickly so I have to work fast and effectively.
Are there a lot of temp roles in publishing? As well as holiday and sickness cover, there are also temps and freelances who work on projects, or cover maternity leave. Assignments can range from a week to several months and can be in any publishing job role at all levels. Some of the assignments are often extended and can sometimes lead to permanent jobs.
Why should job seekers use Atwood Tate? We have all worked in publishing and are a very customer service-focused agency. We take the time to listen to both our candidates and clients and try to treat people as we’d like to be treated. We offer a job alert email service for candidates so they get an instant alert for a vacancy as soon as it is posted.
What do you look for in a CV? I like CVs that are clear, easy to read and tell a story about a person in a few simple bullet points. I also feel a summary paragraph at the top of the CV helps me to better understand the person and what they are looking for.
What advice would you give to those looking to work in publishing?
Publishing is an exciting industry but is also very competitive. You have to be proactive, do research and write a targeted covering letter for each application. You may well need to do work experience or have some level of office experience. I can help you get paid temp work so you can continue to build on your experience and also explore the various types of company cultures to see where you fit best.
