o to Ham House, the National Trust pile on the River Thames: home of
inbred aristos for centuries, now home of the annual HarperCollins LBF hootenanny. The great and the good (and agents) were rammed into the grand edifice. All had the same question on their lips—the same query that does the rounds at any HC do with boss Charlie Redmayne present—“Is Eddie here? No? Will Eddie be here any time soon?” Not last night,
my dears—but seeing Bookseller Industry Award winners Ann- Janine Murtagh and Nicholas Pearson in the flesh trumps a mere Oscar winner, to my mind. The main attraction? Many were

and thinking it might have been Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who
plays the frightfully tall “Game of Thrones” baddie. “Oh, no, it’s just David Roth-Ey.” Kate Elton was there looking rather ebullient, perhaps basking in the glow of hooking Karin
Slaughter from PRH yesterday— the publishing equivalent of the Red Wedding, I suppose. (Made all the more painful by several “Welcome to Blighty”-type tweets to Slaughter from PRH UK staffers. Awks.)
