United Rotorcraft Completes New Helicopter Paint Facility

FAA Certifi es Floats for R66 Turbine

Robinson Helicopter Company’s fl oat option for its 5-place R66 was approved by the FAA on November 15, 2014. Designated the R66 Turbine Marine, the R66 pop-out fl oat option is similar to the R44 Clipper pop-out fl oat option (in fact, the same fl oat tubes are used) and like the Clipper, the R66 Turbine Marine off ers an additional level of safety for over-water operations.

United Rotorcraft, an Air Methods Division, recently completed a 6,600-square-foot aircraft painting facility located in Decatur, Texas. The facility is equipped with a paint booth that is 18 feet wide by 63 feet long, and features solid-state controls that regulate humidity levels, temperatures, and downdraft ventilation to achieve the precise environment for the highest quality paint

“Our new state-of-the-art facility has the ability to paint a variety of aircraft all the way

The fl oat option adds approximately 65 pounds to the helicopter’s empty weight. When not in use, the fl oat tubes stow in low-profi le protective covers along the landing gear skids, minimizing drag and allowing easy cabin entry and exit.

Primarily used in emergencies, the fl oats activate by a lever on the pilot’s collective and infl ate within three seconds, allowing the pilot to make an immediate water landing if necessary. Pressurized helium from a tank mounted beneath the right rear seat provides the rapid infl ation.

The R66 Turbine Marine is also approved for water takeoff s at reduced operating weights, allowing for water operations training or limited amphibious use if desired.
