During our visit, we joined a group of lively and friendly pre-schoolers for their outdoor play session who were enjoying the fresh air despite the cold January weather. Along with the outlast set, their outdoor area includes trikes, cars, a playhouse and even two pet rabbits. The children were all more than happy to demonstrate their building skills and helped us build the outlast set into a castle!
Speaking to the nursery staff , we heard about some of the other constructions that the children had undertaken – the outlast blocks have already become sofas and chairs, thrones, castles, shops and even a stage with musical instruments including African drumming.
Not only that, it’s been used to encourage physical development through building and completing obstacle courses, and the staff have invented counting games to teach outdoor maths.
The set is now a permanent fi xture in the nursery’s outdoor space, used by all diff erent ages of nursery children and also the after school club.
Laura Stanley, the manager at Tinkerbells commented “The children have really enjoyed it. It is great for child-led play with the older children who love using their imagination to build diff erent things.”
