ZedScan device helps detect

cervical cancer A pioneering diagnostic device identifies more abnormal cells on the cervix than standard colposcopy, according to data published in two European clinical papers. ZEDSCAN is a portable, handheld device which uses Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) technology to detect dysplasia and cancer of the cervix. It can measure and detect tissue changes in women identified with an abnormal smear test.

UK research published in the European Journal of Gynaecological Oncology (EJGO) shows ZedScan, an adjunct to colposcopy, increases the detection of high-grade CIN in women referred with both low-grade and high- grade abnormal cytology.

The combination of ZedScan and

colposcopy improved the outcome of women who were treated at first visit with over 95% having high-grade CIN on histology. The second paper published in the European Journal of Obstretics and Gynaecology (EJOG), examines the influence of HPV genotypes on colposcopic performance. It also reveals by using ZedScan, more high-grade CIN is detected irrespective of HPV genotype.

Digital consent forms for treatment

eConsent is a unique, clinician led, digital solution which individualises and enhances patient consent to treatment. It has been designed by surgeons to

enable Trusts to improve patient experience, save consultant time and standardise the information delivered during the consent to treatment process. Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust analysed their paper consent forms

prior to the introduction of eConsent. Their audit showed the following: l 51% of medical notes did not have documented evidence that the benefits and risks of a procedure had been discussed with the patient.

l 31% of consent forms did not have the date that the consent was obtained recorded.

l 37% of forms did not have the patient’s NHS number recorded.

l 25% of hand-written forms were found to contain illegible items such as the name of the procedure to be performed.

l 21% of forms were completed by a non-competent healthcare professional.

Following the introduction of eConsent all of the indicators listed above were corrected to zero errors.

New leakproof vials from Thermo Scientific

A new series of leakproof vials has been developed to provide sample protection and user safety by enabling correct cap application every time.

The unique lid-lock design of the THERMO SCIENTIFIC Samco Clicktainer vials makes them ideal for the secure transport of valuable and often hazardous clinical, research and forensic samples.

The new Samco Clicktainer vials are designed for the secure collection and handling

of fluid, solid and powder samples, including urine, sputum and stool specimens. Available in 120ml and 90ml formats with an optional built-in temperature strip, users simply turn the lid gently past the lock symbol and an audible ‘click’ sound will signify the lid is fully sealed. The click mechanism is also tactile, and clear markers on the lid and vial also indicate when the lid is correctly closed. As such, users can be confident their samples are safe.

New EndoSwab testing system

from Hygiena HYGIENA, a leading provider of microbial detection, monitoring and identification solutions, has introduced its new EndoSwab testing system, which provides real-time verification of the cleanliness of endoscopes and other reusable medical instruments. Featuring an absorbent sponge tip attached to a 2.4 m long flexible wand, the system enables sample collection from even hard-to- reach internal channels and components, ensuring that results can be trusted. Following sampling, the sponge tip is removed and assessed using one of Hygiena’s adenosine triphosphate (ATP) test devices. This quick process highlights whether the initial cleaning steps have been effective, so the instruments can then be disinfected, sterilised and reused.
