TRACEABILITY
who spends less time in theatre and it’s improving the efficiency of their clinicians.
The future of the programme
With the impact GS1 implementation has had in one area of their Trust, Derby are already rolling the programme out into other areas. Every location in Derby, even stairwells, is now uniquely coded and the same approach in theatres is now being rolled out to wards, bringing the same level of detail and efficiency to the whole patient pathway. In wards, they use iPads, combined with their existing system, to track the location, the staff present and what they’re doing, and the devices being used. At the touch of a button, a clinician can track the patient pathway from the point of entering the hospital for an elective procedure and through the course of the treatment, with all this back up detail.
The vision for Derby is for GS1 standards to be embedded in everything they do as an organisation – the impact they’ve had so far has been too important for them not to. But this isn’t limited to Derby. The five other Scan4Safety Trusts are all implementing GS1 standards and seeing the benefits. All six are due to complete the programme at the end of this year and they’ve already over-delivered by 70% in estimated financial savings. Earlier this year, Lord Carter summarised their progress well: “GS1 barcoding is the second most important change in the NHS at the moment, after staff productivity.”
All of this has been backed by the development of a business case by the Department of Health for further funding for all remaining 148 acute Trusts, with savings of over £1 billion predicted across the entire NHS. What’s happening at Derby positions them as one of the leading Trusts not just in England but across the world, for the data and level of traceability they have on offer. An implementation of GS1 standards that started in theatre is now reaching every area of their hospitals – improving patient safety, reducing clinical variation and driving operational efficiencies. And, what’s happening at Derby is just one example of how the use of GS1 standards are already helping to build a sustainable future for the NHS – now and in the years to come.
