fails BMAT level one, the caregiver will likely need a mechanical lift to help position the patient in bed, turn them every two hours, raise the patient in bed, perform catheter care, and complete dressing changes, to name just a few. To safely perform these activities, the nursing care team will need to select the lift resource designed or specified to support these activities.


Knowing how to assess for mobility deficits, and when to use mechanical lifts to advance patient mobility can now become a part of routine care, as caregivers protect patients while mobilizing earlier and often. BMAT was created by the team at Banner Health, who enhanced previously-developed tools from Hill-Rom. The BMAT was validated by the clinical team at Banner Health in the United States, and is currently being used by a growing number of healthcare providers and networks across U.S. and around the world.4


The use of mechanical lifts reduces potential for caregiver injury and can reduce the physical strain of lifting and moving a patient manually.3
