INSTITUTE NEWS Affiliate evening includes apprenticeship focus
At an evening event on 9 March hosted by consulting building services engineers, Troup Bywaters + Anders (TB+A) at its London offices, an audience of current and prospective IHEEM Company Affiliates were updated on the Institute’s future plans, heard the latest on this year’s Hospital Innovations and Healthcare Estates events, learned more about the benefits of Institute membership, and heard interesting presentations – including from three young apprentices – about TB+A’s award-winning apprenticeship scheme (HEJ – September 2015, September 2016, and February and March 2017). After a welcome from Alan Newman, Partner at TB+A, IHEEM chief executive, Julian Amey, introduced the evening, noting that it was taking place during the 2017 National Apprenticeship Week, and the day after International Women’s Day. As the father of three daughters, he said he was ‘particularly aware of the latter’. In concluding his remarks, he introduced IHEEM President, Pete Sellars, who gave a brief summary of his five main ‘themes’ for his presidential term (see HEJ – January 2017).
Exhibitions director at Step Exhibitions, Steve Webb, then gave a presentation on some of the highlights and features planned for Hospital Innovations 2017 – being held this month at Olympia, London, and Healthcare Estates 2017, which will take place at Manchester Central from 10-11 October, focusing particularly on the benefits available to Company Affiliate members in terms of contributing to the proceedings, and the discounts available on the published prices for both exhibiting and attending. He also highlighted a new initiative at this year’s Healthcare Estates event – a dedicated zone within the exhibition for apprentices, including a ‘theatre’ featuring

Chris Parker, IHEEM’s membership development manager, provided an update on the membership benefits available specifically to Company Affiliates. In a presentation titled, ‘Is your IHEEM membership benefiting you?’, he reminded members of the full range of benefits available, and encouraged them to ensure they were taking full advantage of them. Similarly, those attendees not currently members heard the same message and were encouraged to join. Extending the presentation to cover some more recent initiatives, Chris Parker went on to speak about additional marketing benefits available to Affiliates, in terms of exhibitor packages supporting the range of IHEEM seminars and local
conferences. Also newly available are advertising opportunities on the IHEEM e- newsletter and website.
Concluding the evening’s presentations, TB+A’s Alan Newman introduced a presentation on the firm’s award-winning Apprenticeship Scheme. Via two video clips and short presentations from Claire Oliver, HR manager, and three of the current apprentices, Oliver Newman, Jake Marshall, and Francesca Hawes, delegates were treated to an insight into the key factors behind the scheme’s success. On 20 January this year – in the latest in a line of such achievements for its work on recruiting young talent – the company was crowned as the British Gas- sponsored Medium Employer of the Year at the National Apprenticeship 2016 Awards at London’s Grosvenor House.
