ingenuity to benefit their adopted city in the fields of science and technology. Today’s Metropolis is still a place of wonder, as seen in the city’s advanced maglev Monorail network. Bridges connect the central island of New Troy to the other boroughs, while ferries link Metropolis to Gotham City. The central island of New Troy
is often the first thing that comes to mind when people think about Metropolis, but the entire city encompasses the boroughs of Queensland Park, Park Ridge, and Bakerline. Bordered on one side by the West River and on the other by Hob’s River, New Troy itself contains Midtown and Metro Square, as well as the Financial District. Notable concentrations of culture and commerce include theArts District, theFashion District and the Jewelry District. Income levels and ethnicity may vary across New Troy, but its inhabitants share an obvious pride in their hometown. On the north-west side of New
Troy sits Hob’s Bay, once home to 19th-century tenements but now a trendy area that trades on its working-class reputation. Though some areas near Hob’s Bay developed the unfortunate moniker ‘Suicide Slum’, the neighborhood has undergone a transformation at the hands of LexCorp’s ‘Simon Project’, providing refurbished low-income
housing.Chinatown is near Hob’s River, as is the cozy collegiate site of Metropolis University. Queensland Park lies along
the West River and its subdivisions include Newtown, Mount Royal, Pelham, North Bridge, and Old City. Along the waterfront you’ll find public and private beaches and exclusive estates amid corporate glass-and-steel mid-rises that house communications companies. Newtown is home to several of the city’s smaller museums and is
experiencing a housing boom, with an influx of young moneyed professionals who have renovated the area’s ageing brownstones. InMount Royal, thousands of students attend two more educational establishments, the Metro University of Art and the Metropolis Institute of Technology. TheOld City, named for the very first settlement in the area, is the site of the North Street Seaport, whilePelham is a burgeoning arts community. Bakerline has traditionally been
home to Metropolis’ middle-class white-collar drones, but changing demographics have brought in a twentysomething techie crowd employed by LexCorp and smaller competitors. Old-money estates occupy the southern seaboard, while the neighborhood of Oaktown is still an immigrant-friendly enclave. Berkowitz Airport is located on the fringes of Bakerline. Park Ridge encompasses the
neighborhoods of Racine and Vernon, and is one of the wealthiest and most historic parts of Metropolis.Racine is an upscale artistic haven; you can dine at the exclusive LeMarvin Bistro (p41), for example, or stroll the narrow streets beneath a spreading canopy of oak
branches.Vernon, largely composed of single-family homes, is located on the way to Metropolis International Airport.
Buildings of note In a city with a history as long as that of Metropolis, the eras can be read in the lines of its buildings. VisitCity Hall (p32) for one of the oldest and greatest architectural treasures in Metropolis and to tour its breathtaking Beaux-Arts interior, dating from the mid 19th century. Turn-of-the-20th-century splendor is on display at theSchaffenberger gallery (p53), as well as in the heart
