Shopping Leader of the pack
The story of Gotham City is the story of Wayne Enterprises. No company has meant more to Gotham’s history or done more to shape Gotham’s future than Wayne Enterprises. A diverse megacorporation active in dozens of countries across the world, it still honors its Gotham roots by funnelling much of its wealth into local development. Wayne Enterprises can trace
its origins back centuries to fur traders who occupied the fort in what is now Old Gotham. The Wayne family crafted an empire in the 19th century, first with real estate and transatlantic shipping, and later with railroads and oil. Over 30 years ago a mugger
gunned down company president Thomas Wayne and his wife Martha in a Park Row alley. A shocked city floundered for a decade until orphaned heir Bruce Wayne finally took the helm and charted a new course. Today, Wayne Enterprises is
leading the charge into new frontiers including nanotechnology and genetic engineering. With Bruce Wayne as CEO and Lucius Fox as business manager, the various divisions of Wayne Enterprises – listed below – have seen unprecedented success.
Wayne Aerospace Second only to Ferris Air, Wayne Aerospace manufactures both private jets and commercial airliners and supplies experimental aircraft to NASA. Its engine prototypes using new-wave smart materials are said to be years ahead of their time.
Wayne Biotech Success at sequencing the human genome led Wayne Biotech to market new cures and to introduce better training for hospital workers. A few of the side benefits from Wayne Biotech’s research into plant life – such as color-changing roses – are on display in the exotic Wayne Botanical Garden (p36).
Wayne Chemicals Wayne Chemicals started in the 1950s as a supplier to petrochemical industries in the Burnley district. Today, the division works with Wayne Pharmaceuticals to synthesize vaccines. It is credited with ending the city’s mysterious ‘fear gas’ outbreak.
Wayne Foundation The charitable arm of Wayne Enterprises makes its influence felt all over the city, from the renovations in Park Row to the free medical clinics that offer care to anyone in need, pumping millions into worthy causes. The Wayne Foundation is also a major supporter of Gotham’s arts and culture scene.
Wayne Technologies Miniaturized gadgets and orbital satellites aren’t the only futuristic things being dreamed up in WayneTech’s classified ‘clean room’ labs. WayneTech’s long-running rivalry with Lex Luthor’s LexCorp and Ted Kord’s Kord Industries means that the division never allows itself to sit still.
