ReFRESCO - a CFD code tailored to the maritime world takes shape
Along with the widespread application of the ReFRESCO Code mentioned in other articles of this Report, continuous further refinement and extension is taking place. We review recent, current and future steps in its development.

ARIN has a long history of developing and using compu- tational methods for ship
hydrodynamics. After the early deployment of the free-surface panel code RAPID in practical ship design in the 1990s, MARIN was amongst the first to use a RANS code for viscous ship flows at model and full scale, and to apply it in an optimisation context. CFD methods are now applied on a large scale at MARIN.
CFD use is quickly being expanded to a variety of fields. PARNASSOS, a struc- tured-grid and free-surface fitting code, is widely used for steady ship flows but has
limitations for further extension. The need to deal with more complicated geometries and flows - for ships but also for offshore and renewable energy constructions - required a new and more general approach, which led to the development of ReFRESCO.
ReFRESCO (
www.refresco.org) is a viscous- flow CFD code that solves single or multi- phase, steady or unsteady incompressible flows using Navier-Stokes equations. Various turbulence models, cavitation models and volume-fraction transport equations for different phases are available. In several aspects it resembles a general commercial CFD code, but unlike those, it is set up
