6 CFD – a future ‘numerical towing tank’ for naval vessels Report interviews Oscar van Straten, an engineer from Damen Schelde Naval

Shipbuilding, Research & Technology Support, about the impact of CFD and the long-lasting relationship with MARIN.

9 ReFRESCO - a CFD code tailored to the maritime world takes shape Continuous refinement of the ReFRESCO Code is taking place. We review recent, current and future steps in its development.

12 MARIN invests in the future as CFD takes on more prominent role To facilitate the use of reliable CFD in the design and engineering process, MARIN has invested in a new, large computer cluster, and is sharing its CFD code ReFRESCO with its customers.

14 Complex hull shapes need sophisticated assessment Leading dredging company Van Oord asked MARIN to perform a full assessment of

the hull lines of its new hopper dredger.

16 Calculation of ship-ship and ship-port structure interaction using CFD Carrying out fast and reliable calculations of hydrodynamic interaction forces is a vital part of MARIN’s work. A recent project highlights this.

17 In-depth analysis of anti-roll tanks using CFD simulations In 2014, the behaviour of anti-roll tanks (ARTs) was studied at MARIN by using

ReFRESCO CFD simulations to fully understand the working principles.

18 MARIN uses CFD to assess SSP’s revolutionary new HUB design MARIN combined CFD with fast-time simulations and intensive testing on its bridge simulator to explore the full potential of the new SSP HUB.

20 CFD provides valuable insight into current loads on offshore constructions CFD has become an accurate, efficient and cost-effective design tool to predict current loads on offshore constructions.

22 MARIN assists clients improve the hydrodynamic performance of submarines Numerical computations are increasingly used to assess submarine designs.

23 From fresh Breathe to hot Savannah MARIN plays a role in the launch of Savannah, the world’s first hybrid superyacht –

‘a yacht full of premiers’.

Dear Reader,

‘What does CFD stand for? Colours For Directors’! I had to think about this joke with CFD being the theme of this edition. This makes me a bit hesitant to write enthusiastically about this topic. It is quite easy to say: he is simply impressed by something he does not understand.

And it is true: I myself am not a CFD specialist and I am always quite impressed by the ‘ColourFul Diagrams’ our CFD people are able to produce. But I am almost sure this does not only apply to directors. How can one not be impressed with a picture of a rotating propeller in CFD behind the hull of a ship including colourful pressures, velocities and vorticities?

In general we humans are quite easily impressed by the visual appearance of something. That is true in human relations, but also in technology. Undoubtedly, CFD suggests reality in a very attrac- tive way and has much more impact than boring figures and tables.

But today’s CFD is not just about producing nice visuals. Huge steps have been made and it is clear that CFD will be a major tool for the future design of ships and offshore structures. That is why MARIN has been investing a lot in CFD, both in software and hardware.

As a maritime industry we need a community of people that develop, validate, apply and share their knowledge in this challenging field. An open community that stimulates new developments, but also allows a critical eye over the results. This is what we want to achieve at MARIN with the ‘ReFresco-operation’. Working together with our clients we can make important steps in the development, validation and application of CFD for ships and offshore structures. It will make them both cleaner en safer. So ‘Colours For Directors’ is definitely something from the past!
