Siedlce is the place to be in the Polish mushroom sector. The supporting infrastructure for growers has developed here into a very well-organised chain with composters, casing soil producers and trading houses. One of these trading houses, “FHU Robert”, is owned by Robert Rymuza and

n order to safeguard the continuity of mushroom supplies, Rymuza also has an interest in a number of farms. One of his interests is a 50% share in the farm run by Krolikowski, located in Borki, close to Siedlce. Krolikowski explains how well this combination works. “Rymuza gives us a way to easily market our mushrooms. He has invested in quite a few farms here locally. FHU Robert currently trades some 10% of all the mushrooms produced in Poland. That’s a hefty chunk.”


Spreading the risks


There are 18 growing rooms on Krolikowski’s farm, each of 620 square metres. The farm features the typical vernacular architecture of the region, with sharply pitched roofs above the growing rooms and a sloping roof above the work corridor. This area of Poland has heavy snowfall in winter, so the buildings are designed to cope with this. Filling the rooms is done with a Thilot filler. Krolikowski: “It’s a really reliable machine. You can see that this Dutch company has loads of experience in


building head fillers. By the way, I generally only fill 80 kg of compost per m2


. Most growers,


and advisors, consider that on the low side, but a higher filling weight doesn’t bring me higher production. Each week, we fill two rooms with Mykogen compost and one with Fungis. All spawned compost, of course, and in Poland we are accustomed to using a number of different spawn varieties to spread the risks. Years ago you could have problems with some varieties, but that’s a thing of the past. Even so, we stick to using three. Most of it comes from Spyra in the shape of F11 and Factory 1, and I also fill another 30% of compost spawned with Euromycel E58 and 10% Sylvan A15. We operate a standard 6-week cycle with 3 flushes and use Wokas casing soil.”


Water and climate


The beds are filled and prepared for growing on the machine, so ruffling in the rooms afterwards is unnecessary. Three litres of water/m2


are


added to the compost while it is on the head filler. Once the compost has reached the right
