ISO

The company was awarded ISO 22000 certi- fication in November last year. This standard was developed with the aim of establishing food safety management standards that are accepted worldwide. ISO 22000 can be applied to the entire food chain. Adelbert: “It all revolves around the production process; hygiene, safety guarantees, tracking and tracing. Each batch has 100% traceability and samples must be saved for a year. We didn’t have to make all that many modifications, as since the refit in 2007 we com- plied with the majority of the demands anyway. It was more about getting the details right.” The company already held SKAL certification, as it produces organic and non-GM supplements. Although certification is important for cus-

he family-owned company has a long tradition that is closely entwined with the historic Sara Catharina mill, built in 1846, in

Hoenzadriel. In 1981, Adelbert van Korlaar took over the running of the mill and the milling business from his father. At the time, produc- tion was mainly animal feed. The mushroom farm on the site closed in 2000, but by the mid-1990s the company had already shifted its focus to supplements. SuperChamp was estab- lished in 1998. The location, close to a number of major composting companies, contributed to the decision. However, later on, SuperChamp products were increasingly sold abroad, often through spawn supplier Sylvan. In order to meet modern hygiene and other manufacturing standards for supplements, the production line was thoroughly modernised and automated in 2007. Several new silos were also constructed at the same time, which was complicated in view of the mill’s historic status as a listed building. In 2012, a fully-automatic bag stacker was added, reducing the heavy workload on the employees.

tomers in the mushroom sector, according to Adelbert ISO 22000 is not something they demand as a mandatory requirement. “These types of certification increasingly represent a ‘license to produce’, and our competitors do not hold this certificate. That means we can added distinctive value.” That factor, and the cost price, make all the difference in the highly competitive supplement market say Adelbert and Jeanne.

New products

Last year, SuperChamp launched two new supplements on the market- in their own words ‘cheaper and more efficient’; SuperChamp Optimum Plus is mainly suitable for manual picking farms, while SuperChamp Energy is tailored for oyster mushrooms. In addition, they offer a range of six products, including Basic (a pure product, without any additions) and Mix P, which is chiefly sold abroad. They also produce Organic, a supplement entirely comprised of organic raw materials. Jeanne: “All SuperChamp products are extensively tested first at our own trial facility. We used to do the testing on our own farm.” Our conversation was interrupted by a phone call from a local customer, to which Adelbert and Jeanne smoothly responded by loading a lorry; “Excuse us, we quickly have to bring them an extra pallet, they have run out!”
