In many ways, the 8th ICMBMP in Delhi was a great success (see page 8 and 36). However, maybe there are some reservations to be drawn. One of the questions – even though it is seldom raised publically – is whether three scientific mushroom conferences with their organisations, in a shrinking mushroom research arena that is increasingly privately funded, is not a bit too much of a good thing. The World Society wants to attract more visitors in 2018, when the 9th edition of the ICMBMP is scheduled. But shouldn’t the ambition rather be to present truly important scientific progress at a conference? What is The Aim and is that objective achieved? In addition, the international conferences and trade fairs in our sector are influenced by the spread of globalisation. In the past, they were the ultimate place to exchange knowledge and get up to speed on new developments. Today’s instantaneous media and easier access by air has made the world much smaller, so events risk cannibalising each other.
In the Netherlands, questions were raised by exhibitors at the Mushroom Days regarding the frequency, aims, costs and benefits of the event. The emphasis has shifted from its history as a trade fair into a more network-oriented event, in a shrinking Dutch sector, with a signature and dependence that is becoming ever-more inter- national. Isn’t it too much of a good thing, ‘the Netherlands’ three times in a row (2x Den Bosch and 1x ISMS Amsterdam)? After much debate, a decision has been taken to hold 1 duo-event in 2016, combining the scientific ISMS conference with the commercial Mushroom Days. I think this is a realistic choice, which offers an opportunity to present a truly new, and hopefully unforgetta- ble, concept. Impact, that’s what it’s all about.
I wish you less of the same, and more of the better things in life in 2015.
