Opening of the 8th Chinese Mushroom Days.
The event, funded by the China Chamber of Commerce of Foodstuffs and Native Produce (CFNA) and the Zhangzhou Municipal Govern- ment, and also a number of important regional businesses, has become increasingly more pro- fessional over the years.* Attendance, including from countries outside Asia, was surprisingly high. According to the organisers, the number of visitors (2528) was 30% up on last year. Some 512 participants registered to attend the conference. These figures reflect the stormy developments taking place in the Chinese mushroom industry. The market for fresh mushrooms of an enor-
mous range of varieties is booming, driven by economic growth and the increasing affluence of Chinese consumers. Professional cultivation of white and brown Agaricus Bisporus is also sharply on the rise, and China wants to expand its knowledge in this area in particular. The lectures on this subject, that occupied the first whole day of the conference, were therefore presented in both English and Chinese. Unfor- tunately no simultaneous interpretation was organised for international visitors during the other lectures. This omission will be addressed at the next edition of the event.
