It’s something we are all familiar with – damage caused by incorrectly set static spraying lines or the well-known spraying lorries. I recently spoke with a grower who complained that the fourth bed always evaporated more moisture than the other beds so that the bed in question had to be watered regularly using a hand-held sprayer. After I had done a smoke test, nothing appeared to be wrong with the air movement in the growing rooms. However, on inspecting the spraying lorry it turned out that a large volume of the water was shooting wide of the fourth bed altogether and falling onto the aisle instead. No wonder that this bed always seemed to evaporate more than the other beds at the beginning of the first flush. One of my clients in Iran, Dezfull Mushrooms, with a modern farm installed by Dalsem Mushroom Projects comprising 32 gro- wing rooms of 400m2 and its own phase I and phase II compost production, reaches average yields of 25 kg per square metre on 80-85 kg phase II compost in three flushes. This company also grows on a traditional Iranian farm, which is currently being extended and equipped with a Dutch shelving system and climate control. The construction of phase III tunnels is also being started. On completion of the renovation project and the construction of the phase III tunnels, the production capacity will double. As spraying is left to less well-qualified workers, mistakes and damage occur here too, caused by insufficient attention to maintenance and adjusting the spray arm setting on the lorry. Fixing the arms in place with strong aluminium strips (see photo) solved the problem of a poor spraying pattern. A simple, but adequate solution!
