growers of the necessity of mechanisation and con- tinuous development. Only companies with modern technology will be able to satisfy the increasing quality demands placed on exports and demanded by the retail chain. This makes investments absolutely impera- tive for survival. The author of this article was invited to give three lectu- res as a keynote speaker during the two-day conferen- ce to explain the current status of technological deve- lopment and the points that require particular attention. The lectures focussed on quality problems relative to evaporation and the climate, technical developments in the field of energy and climate, and the ideal growing rooms for top quality mushrooms. A good impression of the development of mushroom growing in the Netherlands was given by Roland van Doremale (Christiaens Group NL). This perfectly complemented the lecture presented by Slawomir Jutkiewicz (Sylvan Polen) on the development of the Polish sector. These two lectures made quite clear that there is no need to reinvent the wheel, the answer is to adopt tried and trusted solutions. This was the message conveyed to the growers in attendance. Developments in Russia and Ukraine were outlined in the lecture by Alexander Khrenov (Sylvan Rusland). The activities of the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture and FruitVeB (Hungarian Interprofessional Organisa- tion for Fruit and Vegetables) were presented by Már- tonffy Béla (FruitVeB Hungary) and Vattamány Ágnes (FruitVeB Hungary) explained about the programmes designed to encourage fruit and vegetable consump- tion.
Plenty of attention was devoted to the subject of mar- keting in the lectures on the possibilities of online com- munication (Sárközy Marketing Hungary), the impres- sive example of creative marketing at Fridrich d.o.o in Croatia and the pros and cons of social marketing (Hajdú Csaba and Szabó Tamás, Bio-Fungi Hungary). Finally, the options for financing and subsidies were discussed (K & H Bank Hungary).
Behind the scenes at Bio-Fungi Guided tours of BioFungi were of course organised and offered groups the chance to look behind the scenes in the entire company (growing rooms, cold storage, packaging and distribution). The various stages of cultivation, and all other aspects of the company, were explained in detail during the tour. The passion, pride and enthusiasm that accompanied the tour emphasise the drive that Bio-Fungi will mobilise to help realise the ambitions of the Hungarian mushroom sector. ◗
