By providing a unified, international response, championed by scientists respected in their field, the industry has been able to combat what has often been a well orchestrated campaign to discredit the health value of our product. In fact several years ago when the Japanese government sought to ban Agaricus mushrooms from the marketplace due to their carcinogenic potential, it was the ISMS and its scientists that provided the compelling data that resulted in a reversal of that decision. developments and the science of mushrooms and to stimulate exchange of new ideas between growers and scientists around the world. ISMS sponsors a major international congress on mushrooms, which is held every 3-5 years. Other events are endorsed and supported by ISMS working with national committees. The Society is governed by a council which includes a member appointed by each Corporate Member and six members elected by ballot of the individual members. The Council elects the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, as well as the past president to be the Executive Com- mittee.

Sciarids crawl around 24 hours a day. It is virtually impossible to seal a growing room 100% so there is risk of sciarids re-infecting your buildings. These pests spread over your farm via attic spaces, walls, floors, doors that don’t close properly, outlets and doors left wide open during harvesting. The damage caused can be extensive, particu- larly if there is already a bubble or cobweb infection present. Glue spray is a very effective agent and works for months on end. The anti-pest sticky sprays currently used to trap insects are less suitable for direct application on joints and gaps. The spray works really well, but is difficult to apply in a thin, even layer and almost impossible to remove, so it is shame to use it directly on walls, doors etc on the farm. However, this spray is ideal for application on loose panels or thick sheets of pa- per. It is best to use a different type of sticky spray on joints, rubber seals and suchlike. AdVisie will be starting trials to investigate a better option for the mushroom sector. An alternative is the thin, yellow roller trap tape, with adhesive on both sides. This tape can be applied around doorways and outlet filters. This yellow tape is available in 100m rolls in widths of 5 and 15 metres. Some growers also suspend tape in the centre aisle of the growing room hanging it from support to support from the front to the back of the room. This works well. There are also growers who use insecticide powder mixed with water, as used in the livestock sector. This paste is applied with a brush or sprayed using a plant sprayer onto the seals around the large entrance doors, and around the smaller doors in the work corridor. This also works well, but the paste has to be applied more often than the sticky spray or the tape. It’
