Sciarids and picking On day one, there were two lectures on the schedule. The first one was done by PhD Mariusz Lewandowski on the biology, monitoring and management of sci- arids on farms. The lecture room was very crowded, reflecting the importance of the problem for many growers. Lewandowski described various forms of sciarids and problems the growers can approach (recognition, hygienic measures, monitoring the amount of mushrooms, loss and risk forecast, decision, assessment). Fighting the sciarids becomes more dif- ficult, because of the lack of chemical measures that are still allowed in Poland. He pointed to nematodes as a promising alternative method. The lecture of Dermot O’Morchoe from Sylvan Polska concerned improvement of picking techniques as a measure to increase the mushroom yield. Better pic- king organization is in his opinion crucial for reduction of production costs. He stressed the importance of the decision about the size we intend to pick and conse- quently train the pickers in the proper procedures, and the importance of the managers of the picking process, as supervisors responsible for the work of ordinary pickers. Growth continues For the second day of the trade fair, a branch discussion was scheduled: “Polish mushroom - tasty and healthy”. The discussion had the formula of an expert board meeting, moderated by Krystian Szudyga. Among the members of the experts panel there were Mr Saxon, mushroom growing advisor, Mr Spychał from the company Lemany, Ms Grałyna Biegałska from the company Biegpol, Mr Gnus representing the company Euromycel, Filip Piotrowski from Champion and the representative of the produ- cers group East Mushroom – Waldemar Górny. The experts summarized last year’s performance of the entire industry and came to the conclusion that the year was ‘pretty good’, due to high demand and high mushroom prices after the long and hot summer in Poland. Szudyga, com- menting on the sometimes negative PR practices concerning mushrooms, said that Poland being such a big exporter of mushrooms (75% production is export) has to care for an excep- tionally good and safe product. He also confirmed the trend signalized during the official opening of the event: In Poland there is still space for development. According to the branch experts, we can count with 200 m2 of additional growing surface within the next two years. About some kind of recovery we can speak in Wielkopolska, where a few new investments are being planned or have already been realized. Many discus- sion participants talked also about promotion that helps getting the message across that the Polish mushroom is a really healthy and tasty product. Our ambition is to come closer to German figures concerning mushroom consumption, amounting to 4 kg per capita (here 3 kilo are preserved mushrooms) and regarding the growing process itself we are heading for a yield of 40 kg/m2.
