FÁILTE/WELCOME
Welcome to the autumn and Christmas programme of the National Concert Hall. There is so much happening at this time of year it is difficult to choose highlights! In our International Concert Series we have the English Chamber Orchestra with conductor José Serebrier and violinist Jennifer Pike (October 4) and the Prague Chamber Orchestra (October 27); the great Korean violinist Kyung Wha Chung (October 17) and the world-famous Choir of King’s College, Cambridge (December 14). Our newly refurbished Kevin Barry Recital Room offers uniquely intimate musical experiences, which include a classical and flamenco guitar series, the RTÉ Contempo Quartet, the ground-breaking JACK Quartet (November 5) and jazz from the Justin Kauflin Trio (October 26) and pianist Jason Moran (November 12 and 13). The legendary jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter headlines our Perspectives series, there’s a special tribute to the great folk-singer Ewan MacColl (October 11) and our Sunday Afternoon Recitals feature the Veronica Dunne Competition winner, Egyptian soprano Fatma Said as well as Irish sopranos Claudia Boyle and Ailish Tynan (October/November).
The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra season gets into full swing in October, offering great orchestral music every Friday: highlights include Patricia Bardon singing Mahler (October 7), pianist Stephen Hough performing Rachmaninov (October 21) and an all-Arvo Pärt concert (October 28). For something rather different Eimear Noone conducts music for video games – a virtual world where a real orchestra forms the aural backdrop surprisingly often and successfully (December 2). The RTÉ Concert Orchestra also play live for Hitchcock’s classic Psycho on October 31st.
The Friends of the National Concert Hall annual gala concert features two of Ireland’s finest pianists, John O’Conor and Veronica McSwiney (November 2) whilst we honour the 30 year contribution to the musical life of Ireland by the Vanbrugh Quartet with our Lifetime Achievement Award (November 20).
For opera lovers, Lyric Opera presents Bizet’s Carmen (October 15, 16 & 18) and there are musical tributes to two great operatic stars Mario Lanza (October 23) and Maria Callas (November 16). In staged musicals, The Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society present Fiddler on the Roof (November 8-12) and Festival Production’s post-Christmas treat this year is Bugsy Malone (December 27-January 3). We also welcome stage musical star Rebecca Storm (November 24) and star of BBC’s Songs of Praise Aled Jones (October 22). Another famous BBC face is comedian and presenter Dara Ó Briain, who brings his Scintillating Science show to open Dublin Science Week (November 14)
Ó Riada father and son both feature in October. There’s another opportunity to see the iconic Mise Éire with music by Seán Ó Riada (October 13) and we host the world premiere of a new work by son Peadar (October 30). Keeping it in the family too are violinist brothers Vladimir and Anton (October 26).
Our Christmas festive programme includes Phil Coulter (November 30); our ever-popular Snowman concerts (December 16-18); RTÉ’s Sunday Miscellany live; Handel’s Messiah (December 7-9); Christmas favourites with the Palestrina Choir (December 4); Culwick Choral (December 5); Dublin County Choir (December 11) and the Goethe-Institut (December 12) and after we round off for Christmas with Carols by Candlelight and The Glory of Christmas (December 22,23) we see in the New Year with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra (December 31).
There’s a lot more besides, so whatever your tastes the National Concert Hall is your home of music.
