SAFETY KNIFE INVENTOR NETS MBE

An inventor who pioneered a knife design that reduces the risk of injury in the workplace has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to innovation.

Bill Ireland conceived The Safety Knife Company’s flagship product, the Fish Safety Knife, 20 years ago. Its fish-shaped handle curves around the blade making it safer to use without compromising functionality.

Initially developed as a tool to help farmers cut strings on hay bales more safely, the product has become a regular feature in the knife policies of many organisations. The original innovation has been further refined drawing on feedback from health and safety managers. Variations of the Fish Safety Knife are now widely used across multiple industries, from manufacturing to distribution.

Today The Safety Knife Company has a healthy market in the UK and overseas. Bill Ireland licenses more than 30 patents and registered designs to The Safety Knife Company, which employs 20 people in Quedgeley, Gloucestershire.
