UZIN GOES FOR GOLD
Two challenging installations where time and performance of the essence, and where UZIN stepped in to deliver first-rate results.
SILVERSTONE UNIVERSITY
TECHNICAL COLLEGE. Home to the Grand Prix Silverstone Racetrack now has its own university. Contractors, CD Flooring were hired to install the flooring and they knew they could rely on the UZIN range to deliver a pole-position fitting.
THE CHALLENGE: Silverstone University Technical College, Northamptonshire, is right in the heart of one of the world’s most famous motor racing circuits. This stunning new multi-million pound facility is a centre of excellence for pupils to study the specialist fields of high performance engineering and technical events management. As a prestigious new build the architect and client required a first-class finish to match the aspirations of the project. There were several types of floor coverings, which had to be installed within a tight timescale in order for the college to be opened as planned.

Parts of the ground floor also required remedial work, which had the potential to cause delays.
THE SOLUTION: The flooring contractor, CD Flooring Installations Limited turned to UZIN because minimising risk was essential on such a prestigious project, which involved installing several different types of floor coverings. Having worked with UZIN on a number of other high-profile projects, most notably the Nottingham City Hospital refurbishment, CD Flooring Installations Limited knew that the UZIN range provided the ideal solution. UZIN’s rapid systems also enabled the flooring work to be streamlined.
CD Flooring Installations Limited encountered cracks in parts of the ground floor substrate, but these were quickly repaired using UZIN RR 203 crack bridge mesh and UZIN NC 888 feather repair, without the need for repair resins and screed anchors. The ground floor was then prepared using UZIN PE 360 primer and UZIN NC 160
smoothing compound. For the first and second floors UZIN PE 630 primer and UZIN NC 175 fibre-reinforced smoothing compound were utilised to avoid the use of plywood and therefore expedite the installation.
Various floor coverings were installed using different UZIN adhesives. 2000m² of safety flooring was installed across several areas on the ground, first and second floors using UZIN KE 2428 multi-purpose adhesive. 2400 m² of carpet tiles were also installed using UZIN U2100 tackifier. 1200m² of Arturo EP3600 resin floor paint was also used to decorate all the workshops adjacent to the old pit on the main track.
THE RESULT: Silverstone UTC opened on time and the new flooring was remarkable, contributing to the vibrant and creative environment. The building even won the ‘Project of the year for the East Midlands’ in an awards ceremony held by The Chartered Institute of Building.
