POLLUTION HOTSPOTS Over 1000 UK schools require air filtration to combat deadly air pollution according to a new report, Camfil explains how effective air cleaners can be in reducing the effects of harmful pollutants.

The Environmental Audit Committee has launched the Action on Air Quality Report which states that new schools and hospitals must not be built next to major roads to help reduce the tens of thousands of deaths currently being caused by nitrogen dioxide and particulate pollution every year in our cities.

The report comments that more than 1,000 existing schools – sited in areas where outdoor air quality is poor, and if they lack proper mechanical ventilation or air filtration – could be fitted with air filtration systems.

In the UK, schools, hospitals, care homes and other buildings may have any, all or none of mechanical ventilation, air conditioning or air filtration. All non-residential buildings should comply with British and European standards EN13779 and EN779:2012 for air filtration.

Doctors have estimated that long term exposure to air pollution in the UK is shortening the lives of around 28,000 people a year. Many schools are near busy roads. The Committee states that children should be protected from air that is unfit to breathe. They also say existing schools in heavily polluted areas should be fitted with air filters, and no more schools should be built on heavily trafficked roads.

said: “These pollutants are having a large effect on children’s health [….] There is a public health crisis in terms of poor air quality. There are nearly as many deaths now caused by air pollution as there are from smoking, so the main thing is we stop a new generation of children being exposed.” She added that it “made sound economic sense” to filter the air coming into the buildings.

All non-residential buildings in the UK should comply with standards EN13799 and EN779:2012 for air filtration. This should be cost-neutral for schools and other facilities with mechanical ventilation, if they use low-energy air filters, and if needed, standalone air purifiers. Effective filtration improves indoor air quality (IAQ) and reduces concentrations of particulates and gaseous contaminants to protect health. It also helps lower absenteeism for students and staff and improves energy efficiency, among other key benefits.
