STRIKING THE BALANCE: SPEED, EASE-OF-USE, AND QUALITY

We met with David Jervis, Product Manager for Setcrete, to discuss how specialist flooring manufacturers are making products purposefully designed for contractors and maintenance workers, with an emphasis on speed and ease-of-use.

Whether managing a residential facility, a sports venue, or an education complex, it is important that major building or refurbishment works are finished quickly. For managers of busy facilities, minimising disruption is a priority, but so is ensuring that refurbishment and maintenance projects are completed to the highest possible standard, and that they last. It is therefore crucial that manufacturers of flooring products provide facilities managers, or specifically contractors employed by them, with the products they need to get jobs done quickly, effectively, and with quality results.

For time-pressed contractors, ensuring that humidity tests have been carried out, damp-proof membranes are installed, and substrates are properly prepared, while necessary, can seem like an added burden. However, a wide range of fasttrack products can make the preparation process quick and easy. Rapid setting damp proof membranes (DPMs) are available that protect flooring installations from moisture damage, and cure in just three hours. The best products will be easy to use and applicable in one coat.

Preparing problematic subfloors can also be made quick and easy with the use of specialist levelling compounds. Previously, when floorcoverings were removed and

adhesive residue remained on the substrate, contractors would have to remove this manually, by shot blasting for example. There are now levelling compounds that are applicable directly onto floors with adhesive residues, saving a great deal of time and effort. Such compounds can also be applied without any need for priming, and will produce a durable, smooth surface for the installation of new floorcoverings.

RAISING THE GAME One of the most time consuming

factors in a flooring installation is the time it takes for the newly levelled floor to set. This can place a great deal of pressure on facilities managers, who will
