LEISURE & HOSPITALITY

the optimum configuration for laying the lining membrane to ensure minimum wastage and it was then cut to size and shape on-site and pulled into position, where it was left to relax before the joins were bonded together using Firestone’s QuickSeam™ Splice Tape.

QuickSeam Splice tape is a 76mm wide self-adhesive tape designed to make joining of sections of PondGard lining quick and simple, while providing a permanent bond. Sections of PondGard are overlapped by at least 50mm, ensuring the integrity of every join.

“THE FISH FARM

INCLUDES A VARIETY OF FISH STOCK AND AT DIFFERENT POINTS IN THE BREEDING CYCLE.”

Once the lining membrane had been laid and all joins had been completed, each of the two fishing ponds were filled slowly with water extracted from a borehole. This process prepared for the fish and removed any remaining creases in the lining membrane. The team then added a layer of clay soil over the lining in each pond, which creates a more natural environment for the fish, with a combination of settlement on the pond bed and dispersion in the water. An aeration system was installed and the fish were introduced once the pond

environment had been allowed to stabilise for a two-month period.

FISH FARM With the indoor ponds completed, the

Cast NW team’s attention turned to external landscaping, the new ‘brew room’ for refreshments and creation of the office and classroom facilities within the greenhouse to complete the indoor fishery education space.

The fish farm element of the scheme is equally important, however, as this not only provides stock for the work that Cast NW does with young people, but also ensures that the organisation has a consistent income stream. The fish farm has been constructed within a polytunnel and includes a number of tank environments for a variety of fish stock and at different points in the breeding cycle.

A 36m x 30m outdoor pond has been excavated in an area of natural clay soil and no liner was required for this because of the clay and the outdoor location.

Within the polytunnel, there are a total of six tanks; four unlined 10m x 6m grading ponds made from recycled plastic and two 5m x 5m breeding tanks constructed from concrete block.

The concrete tanks were also lined with PondGard EPDM membrane, including both the base and the vertical surfaces of the square tanks, with the Firestone team once again supporting the installation with technical calculations to optimise material usage and minimise joins. The team also provided volunteers to help staff and service users to complete the installation to a high standard.

FUTURE PROSPECTS The indoor fishery and fish farm at

Cast NW are now completed and in use, providing meaningful activity for young people that contributes to their future prospects. The next step is to create a community fishing club with a further four ponds at the site and Cast NW is hopeful that work on this scheme will start later in 2016.
