Welcome to the Tomorrow’s Care Yearbook 2016/2017.

This year has been an eventful one to say the least, fraught with challenges that have kept the care sector on its toes.

This April we have seen the introduction of the National Living Wage for all workers on minimum wage aged 25 and over. Although this wage increase has been widely supported as a necessary boost for hard-working care professionals, there has been some concern about how the rise is to be funded.

Nadra Ahmed Executive Chairman of the National Care Association echoed this concern, telling Tomorrow’s Care that she feared the increase would lead to market drop outs. An NCA survey, conducted before the 1st April, also revealed that 24% of care home owners that took part would consider coming out of the market at this time because the introduction of the NLW would make their businesses financially unfeasible.

Another challenge for those operating in the care market this year has been the 20% registration fees hike introduced by the Care Quality Commission.

The Tomorrow’s Care Yearbook gives us the chance, as a sector, to collectively look back and explore the changes, challenges and achievements of the past year. We have a range of interesting pieces for your perusal, with an array of industry professionals offering their thoughts on a range of topics including risk management, the National Living Wage, epilepsy-related training and the importance of patient handling to name but a few.

Let’s treat this yearbook as a nod to those within the care industry that have not only survived this year but thrived, and make it an excuse to give ourselves and others a large pat on the back!

Now sit back, relax and enjoy! EDITOR’S NOTE
