DEB PARTNERS WITH WHO FOR ‘SAVE LIVES: CLEAN YOUR HANDS’ CAMPAIGN

Deb Group has joined forces with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) ‘SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands’ campaign day. The campaign, scheduled for the 5th May this year, seeks to drive hand hygiene awareness and engagement amongst healthcare staff in order to sharply reduce the threat of healthcare- associated infections (HCAIs).

Healthcare facilities are being encouraged by the WHO to register for the campaign and receive a wide range of resources, including educational posters and videos, webinars, monitoring and feedback tools and self-assessment frameworks. Using these healthcare establishments will be able to hold events around their premises to reinforce the message on the importance of hand hygiene.

This year, the campaign is focused primarily on the risks to surgical

SOCIAL CARE EMPLOYEE SURVEY TO TACKLE SOCIAL CARE WORKFORCE

CHALLENGES The Voluntary Organisations Disability Group and the National Care Forum (NCF) have teamed up with Agenda Consulting to tackle social care workforce challenges.

To directly tackle these issues the organisations have undertaken the Social Care Employee Engagement Survey in a bid to gain more of an insight into what influences workforce engagement in social care. The pair hopes that the survey enables organisations to better plan and develop their workforce.

The survey has been shaped by a reference group of industry

patients and the environments which they occupy, from surgical wards and operating theatres to surgical services. This includes the promotion of the hashtag, #safesurgicalhands.

In the UK today, the threat of healthcare associated infections is alarming, with approximately 300,000 patients contracting an illness whilst being treated in healthcare premises, according to the National Institute for Healthcare & Excellence. These patients account for an approximate cost of £1 billion to the NHS and mean that healthcare professionals have less time to focus on new admittances.

Deb has been working closely with the Handz campaign – founded by MP Andrea Jenkyns to raise awareness on hand hygiene – to promote the Deb 3-step hand hygiene protocol that should be followed by healthcare staff: cleanse, sanitise and restore. This revolves around staff members frequently using hand hygiene products at regular intervals dictated by the WHO ‘Five Moments of Hand Hygiene’.

professionals comprising HR directors across the VODG and NCF membership.

Des Kelly OBE, Executive Director, NCF said: “NCF is pleased to be working with experts Agenda Consulting (and in partnership with VODG) to develop an employee engagement survey, which will support our members and complement our other HR benchmarking survey work.”

Dr Rhidian Hughes, Chief Executive, VODG added: “Workforce issues, including the recruitment and retention of staff, are some of the greatest challenges facing social care and disability services. All organisations need an informed starting point as to what engages and motivates staff. The valuable insight and evidence collected through the Social Care Engagement Survey will help organisations to further develop strategies and tactics."

Paul Jakeway, Marketing Director at Deb Group UK commented: “It is impossible to overstate the importance of the SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign. Whilst the 5th May is a one-day event, hand hygiene in healthcare is an issue that must be acknowledged 365 days a year. At Deb, we have long supported the WHO in its efforts to drive hand hygiene compliance in accordance with the ‘WHO Five Moments of Hand Hygiene’ recommendations, and we are delighted to be continuing that support in 2016.”

Roger Parry, Director, Agenda Consulting said: “Having conducted almost 60 employee surveys with over 30 social care organisations, we appreciate the importance of identifying what influences engagement and acting on the feedback from employees. We are delighted to work with NCF and VODG to provide deeper insight into engagement and help organisations to improve performance and service in social care.”

The survey offers a new approach, which has been designed specifically for the social care sector and enables the organisations to compare their results with similar social care organisations. The study comprises some mandatory questions and some questions relating to regulators’ quality frameworks and allows organisations to use their own questions and demographics, as well as choose their own timing.
