TRAINING & EDUCATION
Taking The Lead
Springhill Care Group is on a mission to foster inspirational leadership throughout its homes and across the care sector. The company’s learning and development manager, Theresa Swan, tells us more.
At Springhill Care Group we have a person-centred approach to care, with a focus on supporting people to be the best they can be, an outlook that also encompasses staff training and development.
We are recognised as an Investor in People (IIP), the management framework whose accreditation is widely regarded as a mark of excellence in people management, and signals an organisation that puts people first.
During a visit from IIP, staff demonstrated how the group actively promotes inspirational leadership among its teams across all services. This led to the recommendation by IIP that Springhill Care Group should be a trailblazer in the promotion of leadership training within the health and social care sector.
As a result, the leadership development course has been created. Designed with the input of Springhill Group staff, it has an emphasis on person-centred leadership, exploring the challenges faced during the delivery of services, which must meet rigorous criteria outlined by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Through an interactive programme of learning which aims to equip staff with the knowledge and practical skills required to bring out their full

potential, it addresses the five key lines of enquiry set out by the CQC process: is a service safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led?
Senior management staff from across the Springhill Group have become the first participants in the six month programme, which is being delivered internally to directors and general managers, before being offered to the rest of the care sector once the pilot is complete in September. It is being managed by the Springhill Learning and Development Centre.
The course has received accreditation from the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and is being supported by Knowledgelink, a North West consultancy.
Receiving IIP accreditation involves undergoing regular rigorous and objective assessments to ensure we continue to exceed the standard, and we pride ourselves on being recognised. Having also been acknowledged as actively promoting inspirational leadership, we decided to expand our services and provide an innovative approach – internally initially, and then across the sector. It is a unique opportunity that will benefit the industry and most importantly those who depend on our services.
Leadership is an incredibly important part of the care industry. It relies on
strong leadership and the skill of being able to manage people in a way that inspires enthusiasm for the work in hand.
Person-centred leadership is a core value of the Springhill Group, the foundation of which our reputation is built upon. We want our teams to be motivated and inspired and for management staff to develop a deeper understanding of themselves as leaders.
The challenges faced in the health and social care sector and the need to deliver specialised and complex support means training and staff development have never been more important. At Springhill, we firmly believe that investing in people through training and development is the key to successfully delivering a quality care and support service.
Our continual commitment to staff training and development means we actively encourage and support staff to work towards qualifications by embarking on innovative courses, We do this through individual learning plans and pathways in dedicated suites, while also supporting new staff entering the industry through graduate work placements and apprenticeship programmes.
