As our understanding of good care develops and expands, so too does our approach to designing and decorating the care environment. Care homes, fulfilling both residential and medical needs, present a unique challenge for interior designers and it is often hard to strike the balance between these two functions. Where once care homes tended towards the hospital aesthetic, now we see a move towards more stylish interiors.

By modelling homes on boutique hotels, Gracewell consciously breaks the mould of the traditional care home. In communal areas, furniture is arranged in small clusters as opposed to a traditional horseshoe. Breaking these ‘lounge circles’ facilitates more intimate conversation and allows residents to interact in a more personal way.

Each home has its own beauty salon where residents can be pampered and many homes have their own cinemas, making movie night an extra-special experience. Each bedroom is modelled after a movie star from the golden era in Hollywood – residents can choose the elegant masculinity of Cary Grant or the feminine sparkle of Marilyn Monroe. These touches of style and glamour provide residents with a home they are excited by and truly proud of.


Express Yourself Many features of Gracewell homes are also designed to help residents express individual personalities and preserve a sense of identity.


Memory boxes are an important part of this. Integrated into the construction of the wall, recessed memory boxes sit outside each bedroom. These boxes are illuminated and filled with important personal belongings and memorabilia. Each resident’s designated carer works closely with their family and friends to build a picture of their life and tell their story through the memory box.


These boxes can have a positive impact on the emotional wellbeing of residents but can also aid cognitive function and play a role in dementia care. The boxes provide a helpful
