HEALTHCARE HYGIENE

THE HEALTHCARE WASHROOM

JUGGLING ACT

Hygiene, efficiency, sustainability, economy in use – how does a healthcare provider manage to juggle all these elements when equipping its washrooms? Amelia Baker from Tork explains how it is done.

There are particular challenges involved when designing and equipping any washroom for the healthcare sector.

A juggling act needs to take place in order to ensure that many important priorities are met.

Hygiene is of course critically important since hospitals are inevitably filled with vulnerable people who may have compromised immune systems. The potential for cross- contamination in such an environment is high, which means that washroom providers need to work hard to ensure that dispensers for soap, toilet tissue and hand towels can potentially help to reduce the cross-contamination risk.

But there are other important considerations to bear in mind. Increasingly tight healthcare budgets mean that cost is always a major consideration. Products that keep down cost in use will therefore be important. Sustainability, too, will always be borne in mind in any public sector facility.

Safety is another important issue in the healthcare washroom. Drug-taking may be a risk in any environment where needles and medication are readily available and pilfered needles have been known to be stored in washrooms, potentially inside dispensers. So washrooms should be designed and equipped to minimise the number of hiding places in which drug paraphernalia may be stored.

Since any hospital houses more than its fair share of elderly patients who may be weak and frail, all washroom systems should be easy to use in order to ensure that hand hygiene is within the reach of everyone.

Fulfilling all these needs can be a challenge for the healthcare washroom provider. But fortunately there are systems on the market that combine many of the features required to keep hospital washrooms hygienic, cost- effective, sustainable and safe.
