Yassir said: “I think part of the problem lies with the education system. Firstly, there isn’t enough guidance available when it comes to how to pursue a career, especially in the creative and design industries. Secondly, schools and colleges don’t really prepare young people for the world of work; there’s not much advice available when it comes to writing a CV, for example, or how to conduct yourself during an interview - if you’re lucky enough to get to that stage!”

In response, panel members offered the young people sitting in the audience advice when it comes to securing that first all-important job.

MILLIKEN AND SKETCH HELP TO INSPIRE

FUTURE DESIGNERS Young people were given the opportunity to gain an insight into the design industry at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week, as part of the Designing Futures initiative.

Following a busy day of communication skills training, EC1 showroom tours and workshops; the aspiring designers and architects gathered at the Milliken showroom to hear from a panel of design and architecture professionals, as well as inspirational business leaders.

Set up by Jade-Ilke Creative Solutions and supported by Sketch Studios, Clerkenwell Design Week and Milliken; Designing Futures is a new project focussed on creating

career opportunities within the design industry for young people from less advantaged backgrounds.

According to recent government statistics, 853,000 people aged 16- 24 are not in education, employment or training. In order to combat these worryingly high levels of youth unemployment and disengagement, the collective of companies and individuals at May’s launch event discussed how organisations can improve access to this creative and competitive industry, and what the young people themselves need to do in order to get their foot on the first rung of the career ladder.

During the panel discussion, Yassir Sohail, Contracts Manager at Sketch and former mentee of Jade Ilke, shared his experience of the entry-level job market.

Professor Phil Cleaver, Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Professor in the Creative Industries in the School of Art and Design at Middlesex University and author of ‘What They Didn’t Teach You In Design School’, suggests young people should build their skill set wherever possible. Companies are, of course, looking for technical ability; but creativity, passion, attitude and aptitude are of equal importance, as are life/people skills and, of course, not forgetting common-sense.

Managing Director of Sketch, Jon Odey, said: “Now more than ever before, it’s time for business leaders to really focus on improving access – not only to fill the current void in the youth unemployment landscape, but also to make the most of the talented generation that is slowly but surely entering the world of work.”
