THE FLOOR THAT’S WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

Georgie Whitworth takes a look inside the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre where

the life events of people from a range of different backgrounds are displayed on the floor for all to see. She also explores some of the stories behind the plaques.

The Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre, located in Manchester’s St Ann’s Square, was built on a foundation to share powerful stories; but the moving tales are not simply limited to the stage alone. The lives of real people are detailed in the furnishings of the building itself on special commemorative plaques attached to the floor and seats.

Established over 40 years ago, The Royal Exchange Theatre has put on hundreds of performances, from Shakespeare to Cinderella and The Three Musketeers. The theatre is a charity and relies on donations from

the public for its upkeep and for the programmes it runs to encourage others to get involved in the theatre.

The organisation needs to raise around £500,000 each year to be able to keep making great theatre, whilst keeping ticket prices as low as possible. This is why the company feels that it is of great importance to show their gratitude to the generous public by marking donations of a significant amount with a special plaque.

14 | SPOTLIGHT ON: MANCHESTER ROYAL EXCHANGE THEATRE

Exchange Theatre, said: “It’s a really lovely way of acknowledging gifts.”

For donations of over £500, a seat plaque can be commissioned or, for gifts of £1000 and over, a floor plaque can be installed. People can choose their own message to be engraved on the plaque and its location on the floor. The inscriptions can range from as little as a name, to a meaningful message dedicated to a loved one.

The theatre displays over 300 plaques, each one with a different story behind it.
