RETAIL & DAYTIME CLEANING WHO YOU GONNA CALL?

A problem that has plagued cleaning operatives working in shopping centres, train stations, on the streets and indeed in any sector, is removing chewing gum. However, thanks to their new GumBuster machine, Osprey DeepClean believe they’ve finally got a product that is up to the task. Here, we hear why they should be the ones to call in a gum-busting emergency.

Next time you’re out and about take a look at the pavement beneath your feet. Did you notice the dirty round spots that blight surfaces everywhere and do you know what they are? You might be surprised to learn that it’s discarded chewed gum.

Visit any shopping centre, supermarket, school, university, sports stadium, any public area and you are almost guaranteed to find these spots on the floors and walls, street furniture and surrounding areas. Not only do they make the area unappealing and unattractive for visitors, it can also instigate further negative behaviour towards littering.

To try and combat this it is essential to encourage a ‘see it clean, keep it clean’ attitude. Encourage visitors to see the hard work that is carried out by cleaning teams, and to work with operatives instead of against them. This can be easily achieved when cleaning and sanitation is carried out during the day. Yet the cleaning equipment itself is not necessarily ‘daytime friendly’. Trailing cables, noisy generators and masses of water from pressure washers do not easily lend themselves to densely populated public areas in need of cleaning.

Thankfully a simple solution has been invented and manufactured here in the UK that not only removes discarded chewing gum in a matter of seconds but has been designed for use in areas where the public need not be excluded – the GB1 from GumBusters; the world’s first battery-operated gum removal machine.

This machine is the ultimate ‘daytime friendly’ cleaning unit and provides an ideal visual deterrent to stop these gum deposits from being dropped in the first place. One full overnight charge of the battery and this simple unit is ready to bust gum for up to six hours a day, every day.

“We had a simple concept,” explained Thomas Stuecken, Chairman of GumBusters. “We wanted to produce a unit that is simple to operate yet powerful enough to remove chewing gum deposits and work for an entire shift from one battery charge. And the GB1 is the most cost effective, fit for purpose unit on the market.”

Not only will the GB1 bust gum for six hours, it is virtually silent while in operation. “It’s so quiet,” continued Thomas, “that we had to fit a flashing beacon to alert people of its presence.” And the benefits don’t stop there. The GB1 is very inexpensive to run with operating costs at less than £2.50p/h and because it is manufactured in the UK, you can be confident of the excellent build quality. It will work on a multitude of surfaces too and as the operator is not restricted by a power supply, there are no restrictions as to where the GB1 will operate either.

Previous gum removal technologies risked repetitive strain injuries for the operator or required the strength of Iron Man to carry a portable unit inside a rucksack. The GB1 is free from all these issues. The large rubber wheels ensure the unit is easily transportable and the handle is lightweight and flexible, having been ergonomically designed to reduce any risk of RSI’s. The simple controls and straightforward instructions mean that, with minimal training, anyone can operate it.

Daytime cleaning may not suit every cleaning task but it should be encouraged wherever possible. The benefits of a machine like the GB1 far outweigh any negatives and battery power is already revolutionising gum removal and cleaning with dry steam in general. It’s fair to say that with companies like GumBusters moving with the times to provide modern, up to date tools for the job, cleaning staff can feel more positive, more valued and more part of the team than ever before.
