Thumbs-up for

new Foundation TENANTS from Dunedin Canmore have given their thumbs-up to a new trust that will help 7000 people in its first year. The Wheatley Foundation, chaired by public health expert Sir Harry Burns, will spend around £3million a year on programmes for people in our communities. They include Wheatley’s Modern Apprenticeship programme and the Wheatley Pledge, which encourages our contractors to provide jobs and training for our customers. The Modern Apprenticeship scheme, funded by the Wheatley Foundation, will see the young people spend two years working in housing and business and studying for an SVQ qualification while earning a wage.

The Foundation also funds My Great Start, which supports new tenants to settle into their homes by offering help and advice, including budgeting skills. If you would like to know more about the Wheatley Pledge scheme, please contact Lynne Mitchell on 0141 274 5721 or email wheatley.pledge@ wheatley-group.com Find out more about our Modern Apprenticeships on page 8.

Cassie’s mission to save Gracemount Mansion

A DUNEDIN Canmore Modern Apprentice is fighting to save her local community centre.

Cassie Mitchell, 18, from Gracemount, Edinburgh, has joined a committee that is working to keep the historic Gracemount Mansion from closing its doors to the public by raising awareness of the great facilities it offers.

Funds raised from groups paying to use the Mansion’s facilities, which include three kitchens, a BMX track, a walled garden and a small football pitch, will be vital to keeping the community centre’s doors open. A number of groups already use the Mansion, including Dunedin Canmore Youth Projects and Cassie’s own Nana who runs a knitting club. If the Mansion has to close they will need to find other venues.

Cassie said: “It’s been a great opportunity to get involved in the committee to save Gracemount Mansion from closing. “The fact I’ve been living in the area for a while is good as I know what local young people want from a community centre and I’ve been able to get my opinions across. “As the committee secretary the skills I’ve learnt, such as minute taking, have been really helpful towards my role in
