college ranks, chances are you’re going to be in high demand from larger schools. Andy Walker knows this, but he is taking his sweet time in deciding where that career path will lead him next. “I love Phoenix, and I love Arizona.

HEN YOU PLAY ON AN NCAA championship golf team, and then coach another squad to a national title in the junior-

in no hurry to take a D-1 (Division 1) job because this is where my heart is,” said the easygoing 40-year-old who coaches top-ranked South Mountain Community College, the defending National Junior College Athletic Association champ. Walker, who played on the 1997

NCAA Championship golf team at Pepperdine, has had some great offers, he said. But for the moment, he relishes his role at “South,” as he calls it, as well as teaching at the Golf Channel

Academy at the Legacy Golf Resort in south Phoenix. And did we mention a junior and amateur career that piled up 40 state and national trophies? Or the 28 professional wins Walker racked up on the Canadian Tour, Gateway Tour and NGA Hooters Tour while playing part time on the Web.com and PGA tours? To say that Walker has been there

and done that would be fairly accurate. Yes, he’s coached and taught golf to some really good players, like good friend Jason Gore on the PGA Tour. And some of his pupils were really good players in other sports, like Arizona Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald and baseball greats Joe Carter and Ozzie Smith. And, as you might expect, Walker has a few other notable accomplishments on his resume, like playing junior golf against Tiger Woods “20 to 25 times,” as well as being one of the more memorable characters on the Golf Channel’s Big Break series. If that’s not enough, he recently founded the one-of-a-kind U.S. Golf Combines, which helps kids earn college scholarships.
