little more “us” with every new chair or painting we find.
Have you got any tips for someone looking to open a bar/ venue? Location is so important but without giving
away too many secrets to your success, is there anything that just HAS to be considered...
It’s obviously early days for us, possibly too early to say we’ve cracked the code to success. I think what sets us apart from a lot of modern bars though, especially the chains that are slowly taking over industry, is personal involvement. You can have all the money in the world and it can buy you a sleek interior, all the products available and fancy gadgets, but you can’t buy passion. I think it’s easy for customers to tell the difference between a venue that’s run on blood, sweat and tears from all the people involved and a strictly corporate one. I know which one I’d rather drink in myself.
If you’re looking to open a venue, I would recommend to team up with people you know and trust, as you’ll likely be spending a lot of time with them. Two or three pairs of eyes always see more than one, I couldn’t imagine doing this all alone or without a support network. On top of that, please don’t buy a bar or restaurant if you’ve never worked in one before. You can love food and drink
as a customer, but that does not give you the working knowledge to actually run a venue.
British nightlife and our pub/ drinking culture as we know it is under threat for variousreasons. Looking after the millennial seems to be a good way to steady the ship?...
I think you need to look after all your customers, not just one group. It’s easy to think that because we sell craft beer and spirits, we’re only trying to appeal to the younger generation of drinkers. The way I see it we’re selling our drinks to anyone who’s interested in quality products, we will have something for everyone. I think a friendly face behind the bar is much more important to people of all generations really. Being trendy is great, but I think you need to have a solid base to fall back on when a trend blows over. Good customer service will never go out of fashion.
Bit of fun to wrap things up. We’ve given you an endless budget (hypothetically by the way, haha!) and asked you to lay on the event of all events for one night only at the Foxglove. Anyone past or present can be there and perform. What’s it going to be?...
That’s easy. We’ve taken inspiration for the name of the pub from the music by an American band called Murder By Death. To have them play here would be somewhat of a dream coming true!
