EVENTS REPORT

DSS Europe 2017 Internationales Congress Center München

5-6 July 2-17

The Munich Congress Centre saw nearly 700 delegates gather to discover the business roadmap for the international Digital Signage and DooH industry. The Summit revealed a growing interest in programmatic signage.

Attendance at DSS Europe, the first to be held at the ICM - Internationales Congress Center München, was the highest in its 11-year history. Almost 700 attendees came to the conference and expo representing an increase of 53% on the 2016 edition. DSS Europe is a joint venture of invidis con- sulting and Integrated Systems Events, the producers of the Integrated Systems Europe exhibition. The conference, comprised of keynotes, presentations and panels, explored Digital Signage and Retail Experiences along- side DooH and Smart Cities. The twin-track programme provided delegates with exclusive market intelligence on new products and technologies and their application in real world strategic business scenarios.

Compelling content

At the forefront of the debate was the key role Digital Signage will play in the evolu- tion of the ‘bricks and mortar’ store, and how retail businesses might engage with the consumer in light of digital competition. For the DooH conference track the inevitable rise

EVENTS PREVIEW VR, MR and AR at IBC 2017

Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) will come under real-world scrutiny at IBC2017, with opportunities through- out the show to learn more about these new technologies - from their current place in the market to the opportunities they offer, as well as examining technological challenges and user experiences.

The relationship between the AV community and IBC, as the world’s leading broadcast event has always been a bit on-and-off – for example, the limited appeal of IBC as a digital signage showcase. This year, the event is focused on the emerging technologies of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). Rikard Steiber, President Viveport, and SVP Virtual Reality at HTC Vive, will give a confer- ence keynote presentation on 16th Septem- ber looking at the road ahead for VR. The session will look at the emerging swathe of consumer devices and services, such as the Viveport VR app store, as well as showcasing successful VR experiences across platforms, from entertainment to sports content.

Revenue prospects

While revenue forecasts for VR and AR over the next three years run into the billions, many companies are still hesitant to invest. The panel discussion “Leaving the Hype Behind: Next Frontier in VR, AR, MR and Other Realities in Between” on 17 Septem- ber, promises an illuminating session on the realities of VR and AV.

Success stories, insight into the projects in R&D, and a pragmatic discussion about what will it take for VR and AR technolo- gies to reach their potential will all feature. Panellists include: Edward Tang, Co-Founder and CTO of Avegant, a company that has developed ground-breaking Retinal Imaging

of programmatic was the dominant theme throughout the sessions.

Florian Rotberg, DSS Europe Chairman and invidis consulting Managing Director, commented: “Attendees got a real sense of the way forward - the challenges and the opportunities. For retail, we are looking at integrated, holistic solutions, engaging customers in innovative and flexible ways. Digital Signage will be right at the heart of the in-store offering whether it’s being used to deliver information, storytelling or entertainment.” He continued: “With the coming together of content, big data, and programmatic we will see the transformation of the Digital out of Home marketplace. The result of this will be the increased personalisation of Digital Signage in this sector.”

Awards

A highlight of DSS Europe included the Evening Event (sponsored by InfoComm In- ternational) and Awards which took place at the close of the first day of the conference.
