Ultra Electronics, the Middlesex- based group of businesses operating in the defence, aerospace, security, cyber, transport and energy markets, topped the table for the region’s large company share price rises in March.


The group, which provides advanced systems to over 20 navies around the world, described 2016 as “a better year” resulting in a positive momentum which saw strong performances in cash generation and order intake. Revenues were up 8% to £785 million with the underlying operating profit up 9% to £131m.


Another good report came from TT Electronics, the Woking provider of engineered electronics. It described 2016 as “a year of good strategic progress


and a strong performance, ahead of expectations”, with the accounts showing underlying operating profit up 26% at £31m.


The section of small quoted companies provided the overall best set of results, with Oxford Biomedica shares showing a near 29% increase in value.


The biopharmaceutical company, which specialises in the development and commercialisation of innovative gene-based medicines, announced preliminary results for last year showing progress with several ground-breaking new drugs.


It helped gross income to rise 64% to £30.8m and a reduction in the operating loss from £14.1m to £11.3m.

Reni Reis was a finalist at last year’s event and embodies the spirit of a true entrepreneur; he saw an opportunity, had a vision, took a risk, worked hard and today the business, Electric Mania, is a success. Here, he describes his journey …


Why did you start your business?


Back in 2008 my youngest brother needed finance to complete his commercial pilot’s licence. We came across a stock clearance website and took out a small loan. We thought it would be a part- time, ‘work from home’ affair but it soon became apparent that we were onto something.


So you were working elsewhere?


Yes, my two brothers and I took big risks in leaving our jobs to develop Electric Mania full- time. We’re a family business and we’ve worked very hard to get to this point. We’re now an online retailer of various consumer items including electronics, household appliances, baking products and stationery. We sell on eBay, Amazon and the Internet and occupy a 15,000 sq ft warehouse.


Why do you think Electric Mania is a success?


The dynamics of the team worked perfectly as my brothers and I all have different


skill sets, which complemented the company’s requirements. We’re ambitious and keep growing the business each year.


What are the biggest challenges?


Being a family business, it can be difficult separating personal and work-related issues but we’ve adapted. Tackling changes has been demanding and we’ve implemented systems to manage this. Complying with the relevant legislation is vital and we’ve started outsourcing this.


What’s next?


We’ve designed some of our own in-house software and are considering selling it to other online retailers. We’ve also started investing in property.


What do you think the region needs to do to help businesses?


It was difficult at first to obtain finance and we had to have a good few years behind us before any banks would help. I think this can be a limiting factor.
