WADMALAW ISLAND

POINTS OF INTEREST 1 BOTANY BAY PLANTATION

SEABROOK ISLAND

OTANY BAY ISLAND

Protected as private lands handed down through centuries by planters made rich by Edisto’s slave laborers working its fertile ground, Civil War and Reconstruction led to industrial tycoons discovering the natural treasures of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Plantation after plantation, bought for getaways and recreation, evolved into the conservation ethic of “This is my land and it shall be Forever Wild.” Those last words, “Forever Wild,” today appear on bumper stickers provided by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which oversees Botany Bay.
